都賀の座敷箒とは

かつて栃木県栃木市都賀町では、材料のホウキモロコシが栽培され、多くの農家が農閑期の副業として箒づくりを行っていました。第二次世界大戦後には町に100軒以上あり箒づくりが盛んだった都賀町ですが、今では荒木時三商店ただ1軒となりました。

都賀の座敷箒の製造は、機械ではなく一本一本が職人による手づくり。

原料となるほうきもろこしは、栃木市内も含め近隣の農家によって栽培された良質なもので、東京型(改良型)・トモエ・変り型・小ぼうき等を製造しています。

大型の箒は畳や絨毯、フローリング掃除に、小型の箒はテーブル掃除や衣類の花粉・ほこり除去、に適しています。

 

What is Tsuga’s Zashiki Broom?

In the past, the town of Tsuga-machi in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, was known for cultivating broomcorn, a raw material used in making brooms. During the off-season, many local farmers engaged in broom-making as a secondary occupation. After World War II, Tsuga-machi boasted over 100 broom makers; today, however, Araki Tokizo Shoten stands as the sole manufacturer and continues the legacy.

In Tsuga-machi, every broom is crafted with meticulous care by skilled artisans rather than with machinery equipment. The high-quality broomcorn used is sourced from local farmers in Tochigi City and its neighboring areas. Araki Tokizo Shoten offers a diverse range of brooms, including the Tokyo-type (improved version), Tomoe, modified types, and smaller variants. The larger brooms excel in cleaning tatami mats, carpets, and floors, while the smaller ones are designed for precise table cleaning and the removal of pollen and dust from clothing.

 

荒木時三商店：伝統と革新が交錯する箒職人の匠の技

荒木時三商店は、1948年（昭和23年）に創業された、栃木県の箒（ほうき）製造の名門です。戦後の混乱がまだ新しい時代、創業者・時三氏は、生計を立てるスキルを身につけるべく、地元の職人から箒作りの手法を学んだのが始まりです。

Araki Tokizo Shoten: Blending Tradition with Innovation in Broom Craftsmanship

Founded in 1948, Araki Tokizo Shoten is a prestigious broom manufacturer in Tochigi Prefecture. During the postwar turmoil, founder Tokizo Araki learned broom-making techniques from local craftsmen in order to master the skills to make a living.

 

創業期の挑戦と成長

当初から箒は、掃除という日常の必需品として高い需要がありました。特に9月と10月にかけては、箒の主要な原料であるほうき草（ホウキモロコシ）の収穫シーズンとなり、時三氏は栃木県を始め、茨城県に至るまで、質の高いほうき草を求めて各地を巡りました。

現在、荒木時三商店は地元の契約農家から厳選されたほうき草を仕入れています。収穫されたほうき草は繊細な加工を繰り返し、一本の箒を完成させるまでに約一週間を費やします。その結果、同じ箒を半世紀近く愛用するお客様も少なくありません。

荒木時三商店の箒は100%手作りで、同じものは一つとして存在しません。それは、耐久性を確保するための緻密な手仕事と、箒作りに対する情熱が詰まった、まさに匠の逸品です。

子供や学生向けにワークショップも開催し、参加者に箒作りの体験を提供。これによって、箒に対する理解と興味が深まるとともに、箒作りの文化を次世代にも継承しています。

 

Challenges and Growth in the Early Years

At the time, brooms were in high demand for daily cleaning needs. During the harvesting season of broom grass in September and October, Tokizo traveled across Tochigi and neighboring Ibaraki Prefecture in search of high-quality broomcorn. 

Today, Araki Tokizo Shoten procures carefully selected broom grass from local contracted farmers. The harvested broomcorn undergoes a multi-step manufacturing process, taking about a week to complete just a single broom. The handcrafted brooms are unique, durable, and have garnered loyalty from customers who have used the same broom for nearly half a century.

Furthermore, Araki Tokizo Shoten offers workshops for children and students, providing them with hands-on experience in broom making. This not only deepens their understanding and interest in traditional brooms but also ensures the continuity of broom-making culture to the next generation.

The Enduring Legacy and Beloved Reputation 

Araki Tokizo Shoten’s brooms are highly regarded for their aesthetics, functionality, and the deep story behind them, coupled with the passion and masterful techniques of the craftsmen. Current owner Mr. Kazuyoshi Araki expresses a desire to provide a better life by making each broom with dedication: “Brooms are deeply rooted in our daily lives. We would like to provide a rich life by making each individual broom with all our heart.”

 

The company embodies Japanese tradition and craftsmanship. Holding one of its brooms in hand allows one to appreciate its beauty and functionality. 制作工程

1. ホウキモロコシ（ほうき草）の上カラ（箒の形状を形成する表面の部分に使用する草）部分を水に3〜4時間浸し柔らかくする

Manufacturing Process

1. Soak the stalks of the broomcorn in water for 3 to 4 hours to soften them. This portion will be used for making the outer surface structure of the broom.

 

2、水に浸していない長いホキモロコシを切断し「芯草」と「カラ」分け、叩き繊維を潰し柔らかくする（芯草：穂先部分を箒の先端部分に使用、カラ：芯草をまとめるもの、箒の中心に使用）
2. Cut and separate the unsoaked section of the broomcorn into two pieces: bristles (which will make up the broom’s brush) and stalk (which will bundle the bristles and be used as the centerpiece of the broom). Hit these parts hard with a hammer until the fibers soften.

 

3.　カラを2〜3本で束ねる
3.　Bundle 2-3 stalks together with a string.

 

 

4.　束ねたカラを囲うように芯草を束ねる
4.　Tie and surround the bristles around the bundled stalks.

 

 

5.　束ねた芯草に上カラも追加し「玉」をつくる
5.　Add additional pieces of stalk to the bundle and wind a string around them to make one sub-brush component.

 

 

6.　中玉2つと尻玉1つをつくる
6.　Create a total of three sub-brush components.

 

7.　綴じ紐と上カラを編み込み「耳」をつくる
7.　Make another larger sub-brush component by weaving new stalks and bristles.

 

8.　耳と隣合わせになる中玉を接合、その隣にも中玉を接合し、最後に尻玉も接合し、4つのパーツを1つにまとめる
8.　Bind all four sub-brush components with a different string.

 

9.　さらに編み込み、2箇所を縛り固定する
9.　Further weave and secure the structure by tying in two places.

 

10.　芯草の長い部分を切断
10.　Trim the long ends of the bristles.

 

11.　柄竹を中央に差し込む
11.　Insert a bamboo handle into the center.

 

12.　柄竹の中心に上カラを編み込む
12.　Weave additional pieces of stalk around the center of the bamboo handle.

 

13.　藤蔓（とうづる）を巻き、鋲を打ちこみ、突出した部分を切る
13.　Wrap wisteria vines, drive in tacks, and cut off protruding parts.

 

14.　形状の安定とデザイン性付加のために紐で綴じる
14.　Bind with an additional string to stabilize the shape and enhance the design.

 

15.　柄竹の先に穴をあけ、形状を保つために吊るせる紐を通し、3〜4日天日干しをして完成
15.　Make a hole at the end of the bamboo handle and put a string through it to hang and maintain its shape. Then dry it in the sun for 3-4 days to complete the entire process.

　

　

工芸士紹介：荒木由和

栃木県伝統工芸品に認定される都賀座敷箒を制作する職人。荒木時三商店二代目。

先代の築いた都賀の座敷箒の名前を絶やすわけにはいかないと考え、50歳くらいから修行を開始。定年後に公務員から箒職人に転身。

Introducing the Craftsman: Yoshikazu Araki

 

Craftsman Mr. Yoshikazu Araki produces the Tsuga's Zashiki broom, which is designated as a traditional handicraft in Tochigi Prefecture. He is the second generation of the Araki Tokizo Shoten. 

He began his apprenticeship at the age of 50, ensuring the continuation of his predecessor’s traditional craftwork. After retiring from his job as a civil worker, Mr. Araki pursued a career in becoming a broom craftsman.

 

先代から受け継いだ技術と伝統を守りつつ、新しいアイデアを取り入れることで、新たな箒の世界を開拓している。

While preserving the techniques and traditions inherited from his ancestors, he explores a new world of broom by incorporating new ideas.
